Apple is quietly preparing the ground for a major leap in digital assistants. According to reports from within the company, engineers have been using a ChatGPT-like internal application to shape what could become the most advanced version of Siri yet. 
The project, codenamed Veritas – a Latin word meaning “truth” – is not intended for consumers at this stage, but instead serves as a sophisticated testing platform for Apple’s AI division.
The app functions much like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, allowing conversational interaction with Apple’s proprietary large language model (LLM). It stores chat histories, lets testers ask contextual questions, and even enables system-level tasks such as searching through personal content like photos, music, emails, or notes. One of its most intriguing features is the ability to carry out in-app actions, such as editing an image or organizing files, which suggests Apple is aiming for a deeper integration of AI into iOS and beyond.
Despite these capabilities, Apple has no plans to release Veritas publicly. Senior executives have repeatedly stated their hesitation to compete directly in the chatbot market, preferring to focus instead on integrating AI deeply and discreetly into their ecosystem. This explains why Veritas exists purely as an internal development tool rather than a consumer product.
The much-anticipated rollout of the next-generation Siri was originally expected this year but has been delayed until March of next year. This timeline shift underscores the complexity of refining AI for consumer use. Meanwhile, Apple is in advanced negotiations with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, exploring external collaborations to bolster Siri’s abilities and ensure competitiveness with rival assistants like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
Apple’s AI ambitions don’t stop at Siri. Insiders suggest that the technology will spread across the company’s product ecosystem. The HomePod smart speaker, Apple TV, and future smart home devices are expected to benefit from these developments. By embedding conversational AI into multiple touchpoints, Apple appears to be laying the foundation for a cohesive, intelligent environment that responds naturally to user commands, whether in the living room, office, or on the go.
With the Veritas project guiding internal experimentation, Apple is positioning itself for a carefully calculated entrance into the new era of AI-driven assistants. While it may not release a standalone chatbot like ChatGPT anytime soon, the company seems determined to deliver something potentially more valuable: a seamless, powerful, and secure AI assistant woven directly into its tightly controlled ecosystem.
