The 2007 horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, long regarded as one of the most essential cult classics of the Halloween season, is finally receiving the treatment many fans have been waiting for: a proper 4K restoration and a limited theatrical run in North America. Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Saga Arts have teamed up with Fathom Entertainment to make this long-overdue cinematic release a reality, with screenings scheduled for October 14 and 16, 2025. Perfectly timed for Halloween, the re-release promises to be a celebratory event for both diehard fans and newcomers alike.

When Trick ‘r Treat first arrived nearly two decades ago, it was quietly shuffled straight to DVD and Blu-ray despite having played at select festivals and events like San Diego Comic-Con.

Over time, however, it defied the odds and built an enduring reputation through word-of-mouth, establishing itself as an annual October must-watch. At the heart of its legacy is Sam, the eerie yet oddly endearing childlike figure clad in orange pajamas and a burlap sack mask. As the press release reminds us, Sam embodies the mischievous spirit of Halloween, enforcing its dark traditions and punishing those who dare to break the rules.

The film itself interweaves several chilling and darkly comedic vignettes: a seemingly ordinary school principal (Dylan Baker) living a double life as a serial killer; a young woman (Anna Paquin) discovering a monstrous secret on her quest for romance; a couple (Leslie Bibb and Tahmoh Penikett) who learn the cost of disrespecting Halloween rituals; and a bitter old man (Brian Cox) confronting Sam himself in a final, terrifying showdown. This anthology format, rich in atmosphere, humor, and gruesome twists, has given Trick ‘r Treat its cult immortality, while Sam has become a modern icon of the holiday.

The upcoming theatrical release will also feature a special look at the making of the movie, highlighting the work of writer-director Michael Dougherty in his feature debut. Fans will additionally be treated to a restored screening of Season’s Greetings, Dougherty’s 1996 animated short that first introduced Sam. That short film, which laid the foundation for the mythology explored in Trick ‘r Treat, has been newly remastered in 4K to match the main feature’s visual polish.

For long-time admirers, the screenings are more than a re-release – they’re the theatrical debut the movie never had. As one fan noted, calling this a “re-release” feels misleading since it never enjoyed a real theatrical run in the first place. Others point out that Arrow Films had already released a 4K restoration on home media, but the big-screen experience is something entirely different. Meanwhile, the debate about a potential sequel continues, with many arguing that Trick ‘r Treat’s unique magic lies in the fact it was never diluted by endless follow-ups, unlike franchises such as V/H/S. Instead, its legacy rests on being a singular, endlessly rewatchable Halloween ritual. For some, it even sits on their shelf untouched since 2009 – a cult gem waiting to be rediscovered.

Ultimately, this October, Trick ‘r Treat finally steps into the spotlight it was denied in 2007. The re-release not only celebrates its place in Halloween tradition but also ensures Sam’s mischievous spirit endures on the big screen for years to come.
