FromSoftware has once again delivered something to both excite and test the patience of its community. Just hours before the official launch of Elden Ring: Nightreign’s new feature, the studio has unveiled a full overview trailer and the patch notes for Update 1.02.2, setting the stage for the arrival of the notorious Deep of Night mode.
Far from being just another difficulty tweak, this mode reshapes how seasoned Nightfarers will approach every encounter.
Dataminers hinted at this ultra-hard challenge back in August, sparking weeks of speculation about how far FromSoftware might push players who already pride themselves on surviving brutal odds. Now the details are official: enemies are stronger across all Depths, and the predictability of encounters has been ripped away. Nightlords no longer announce themselves, and Shifting Earth events may strike without warning. In practical terms, that means preparation becomes far more about adaptability than fine-tuned builds, forcing players to sharpen instincts rather than lean on memorized strategies.
The Deep of Night system introduces a layered descent structure. Each Depth is more punishing than the last, with Depth 5 looming as a milestone few will reach without serious setbacks. Losses send Nightfarers back to safer, earlier stages, creating a tense push-and-pull where risk and perseverance collide. To help balance this punishing difficulty, new weapons and relics are available, offering staggering powers but often tied to heavy drawbacks. This creates a constant calculation: is the trade-off worth the gamble when survival itself is fragile?
FromSoftware’s patch doesn’t just stop at introducing this mode. Update 1.02.2 also rebalances both Nightfarers and Everdark Sovereigns, smoothing out some of the rough edges in PvP and cooperative play, while addressing a slew of bugs. One issue worth noting is that condemned Nightfarers summoned during certain encounters may not display correctly – a bug the team has promised to resolve in an upcoming fix.
If anyone doubted the momentum of the franchise, Bandai Namco’s numbers should silence skeptics. The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion has already sold over 10 million copies, while Nightreign itself sits at 5 million. Combined with over 30 million units sold for the base game, Elden Ring has moved far beyond cult status into a global phenomenon. The steady stream of updates like Deep of Night reinforces a truth fans already know: FromSoftware isn’t just adding content, it’s reinforcing the identity of Elden Ring as a world where difficulty is art and endurance is the player’s badge of honor.
