Apple’s September showcase was dominated by the sleek iPhone Air and the powerhouse iPhone 17 Pro line, but the standard iPhone 17 quietly proved to be one of the most meaningful upgrades in years.

With a sharper design philosophy and significant technological advancements, the iPhone 17 is no longer just the ‘entry model’ – it is a genuine contender for anyone who doesn’t want to spend Pro-level money but still craves high-end features.

The biggest headline is the screen. For the first time in a non-Pro iPhone, Apple has introduced ProMotion technology, bringing adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. This allows ultra-smooth scrolling and responsiveness when gaming or browsing, while the refresh rate can drop as low as 1Hz to save battery life. That low refresh threshold also powers the Always-On Display, meaning you can glance at the time, notifications, widgets, and Live Activities without waking the phone. The display itself measures 6.3 inches, with Super Retina XDR quality and peak brightness hitting an astonishing 3,000 nits – the brightest iPhone screen ever

. Apple also added Ceramic Shield 2 with a newly engineered coating that makes the glass three times more resistant to scratches and reduces glare for better outdoor visibility.

Under the hood, the iPhone 17 debuts the A19 chip, fabricated on an advanced 3nm process. Apple boasts that its six-core CPU runs about 1.5 times faster than the A15 Bionic used in the iPhone 13, while the five-core GPU delivers more than double the graphical performance of that older model. The company’s comparison target is no accident – Apple clearly wants iPhone 13 owners, many of whom are due for an upgrade, to make the leap. The A19 also brings a refreshed Neural Engine that drives Apple Intelligence features, as well as an updated ISP and display engine. The result is snappier performance across multitasking, photography, and AI-driven tools.

Battery life is another win. Apple claims up to 30 hours of video playback on one charge. And if you need to top up quickly, the iPhone 17 can reach 50% in about 20 minutes with Apple’s new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, which supports up to 60W maximum output. This is a notable shift for users who have long requested faster charging capabilities in the standard iPhone lineup.

The iPhone 17 also introduces the Apple N1 connectivity chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread for smart home integration. N1 also enhances everyday features like AirDrop and Personal Hotspot, making them more stable and faster. One controversial change is that in certain markets – including the U.S., Canada, Japan, and several Gulf states – the iPhone 17 will be sold as eSIM-only, eliminating the physical SIM slot entirely.

Photography fans have a lot to celebrate too. For the first time outside the Pro series, the iPhone 17 includes a dual 48 MP rear camera setup: a primary wide sensor and an ultrawide with macro support. The main lens offers crisp lossless 2x zoom, while software improvements such as Photographic Styles and the new ‘Bright’ style in iOS 26 allow for fine-tuning of color, highlights, and skin tones in real time. Apple promises a smarter interpretation of skin tones that avoids the washed-out look some previous models produced, while also adding vibrancy and detail.

Storage has received a significant upgrade. The iPhone 17 now starts at 256GB, effectively doubling the entry point compared to previous base models. Pricing begins at $799 in the U.S., making it one of the best value propositions in Apple’s lineup when weighed against its feature set. Color options include lavender, mist blue, sage, white, and classic black, offering both bold and understated choices.

Availability is equally ambitious. Pre-orders open September 12 across 63 markets, with general release set for September 19. An additional rollout will bring the phone to 22 more regions on September 26, ensuring one of Apple’s fastest global launches to date.

Ultimately, the iPhone 17 feels less like a ‘lite’ version and more like a serious flagship in its own right. With Pro-level features like ProMotion, Always-On Display, dual 48 MP cameras, and expanded storage, this is Apple’s strongest attempt yet at making the mainstream iPhone not just adequate, but genuinely exciting.
