Once again, the lost world of Prey 2 has resurfaced, offering a bittersweet glimpse at a game that might have stood shoulder to shoulder with some of the most ambitious sci-fi titles of the last decade. Originally developed by Human Head Studios as the follow-up to their 2006 cult shooter Prey, the canceled sequel has become something of an industry ghost story – talked about with reverence, regret, and curiosity.
Now, fresh gameplay footage has leaked online, reminding everyone just how far ahead of its time this project truly was.
The latest leak first appeared through a YouTube channel attributed to “David Halsted,” which initially hosted multiple clips of concept and gameplay material before swiftly scrubbing them. Shortly afterward, the footage re-emerged on a long-dormant Duke4 forum thread, where New Blood Interactive’s Dave Oshry spotted and compiled it into a five-minute reel. Though the original Imgur source has since vanished, Oshry’s preservation of the video gives fans a precious look at what could have been.
The footage paints a vivid picture: a bustling neon-drenched city, cyber-enhanced characters, and an atmosphere that feels like it belonged in the same conversation as Cyberpunk 2077 – yet this was years before CD Projekt RED’s blockbuster ever saw the light of day. Human Head seemed intent on pushing the boundaries of first-person storytelling with open-ended missions, vertical exploration, and a gritty sci-fi tone that feels startlingly modern even now.
This isn’t the first time the topic of Prey has clawed its way back into headlines. Just last week, former Bethesda executive Pete Hines revealed candidly in an interview how much internal debate went into Arkane Austin’s decision to reuse the Prey name for their 2017 reboot. Hines admitted he fought tooth and nail against the branding, arguing it created unnecessary baggage. “We spent more time explaining why it was called Prey than actually talking about the game,” he confessed, calling it one of his biggest professional regrets. His frustration underscores how much legacy and naming politics can overshadow the games themselves.
Looking at the resurfaced Prey 2 demo, one can’t help but imagine an alternate timeline where Human Head delivered its vision. A first-person bounty hunter adventure in a sprawling alien metropolis, dripping with atmosphere and player choice, might have carved out a niche all its own. Instead, the project was shelved, and the studio itself eventually shuttered, leaving behind nothing but whispers and leaks. The footage reminds us that the industry sometimes loses gems not because they lacked vision, but because circumstances conspired against them.
For now, these scraps of gameplay are all that remain. They stand as both tantalizing evidence of Human Head’s ambition and a frustrating reminder of how easily potential classics can slip away. Whether more leaks – or perhaps even an unfinished build – ever surface remains to be seen. Until then, fans will continue to watch, rewatch, and wonder about the game that slipped through their fingers.
