KONAMI has revealed that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater hit an impressive milestone right out of the gate, surpassing one million copies sold on its first day of release, August 28.
This figure combines both retail and digital sales, underscoring the enduring appeal of the Metal Gear series nearly two decades after the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater first captivated players on the PlayStation 2 back in 2004.
The remake, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, represents a careful balance of nostalgia and technical reinvention. KONAMI entrusted co-development to Virtuos, a studio well known for handling high-profile remasters, including the recent update of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Unfortunately, Virtuos has been in the headlines for less positive reasons too, facing significant layoffs that affected hundreds of employees earlier this year. The achievement of Snake Eater’s successful launch, however, provides a reminder of the team’s technical expertise despite those setbacks.
Critics have also been enthusiastic. In Wccftech’s review, Kai Tatsumoto scored the game 9.4/10, calling it the “perfect way to experience the rise and fall of Big Boss.” According to Tatsumoto, every element of the original has been meticulously refined to meet modern expectations without sacrificing the quirks and eccentricities that made Snake Eater iconic. The tension between authenticity and modernization has been a key talking point among fans, and this remake seems to walk that fine line effectively.
Meanwhile, PC players wasted no time tinkering under the hood. Modders quickly released a ‘Better Uncap FPS’ mod, removing the 60fps cap and pushing the game further for high-end setups. Enthusiasts also discovered that tweaking the Engine.ini file could enable hidden settings, unlocking features like Lumen ray tracing, Ray Reconstruction, and NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation. These adjustments expand the already striking visuals, offering a glimpse of what the Unreal Engine 5 foundation can truly deliver when combined with PC hardware flexibility.
For KONAMI, the million-seller announcement is more than just numbers. It signals that there remains a massive, loyal audience for Metal Gear and perhaps strengthens the case for future remakes or even new entries in the saga. While skepticism will always surround corporate announcements, the rapid commercial success of Snake Eater proves that, at least this time, the nostalgia-driven gamble has paid off handsomely.
