Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone, often referred to as the ‘iPhone Fold’ for simplicity, is expected to arrive in late 2026. This device has been the subject of years of rumors and speculation, but we now have more details thanks to insights from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate Apple-related supply chain information. One of the most discussed features of foldable phones is the inclusion of an in-display fingerprint sensor, but Kuo has dashed those hopes for the iPhone Fold.

According to his latest analysis, this foldable iPhone will not feature an under-display fingerprint sensor.

Several months ago, Kuo predicted that the iPhone Fold would instead use a side-button Touch ID sensor, which is now backed by further market rumors. Despite the buzz around potential under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, Kuo stands firm in his belief that Apple will stick with the tried-and-true side-mounted capacitive sensor, which has been a staple in recent iPad models. This choice may also be influenced by the fact that a foldable phone like the iPhone Fold would require two under-display scanners – one for the internal folding screen and one for the cover display. Such a setup could complicate production and would not align with Apple’s consistent use of side-mounted sensors on their devices.

Kuo’s comments on Twitter (formerly X) further reinforce the notion that Luxshare ICT, a key supplier for Apple, will be responsible for the side-button Touch ID module. This is a significant detail, as Apple often works closely with select manufacturers for its most critical components. Considering Apple’s history of prioritizing simplicity and user convenience, it makes sense that the iPhone Fold would feature a familiar, reliable biometric method rather than experimenting with an in-display sensor, which is still not as widely accepted as traditional methods.

The iPhone Fold is expected to make waves in the folding smartphone market, though it may not be a mass-market success due to its rumored price range of $2,000 to $2,500. With a 7.8-inch folding display and a 5.5-inch cover screen, this device is poised to offer cutting-edge features, but its high price tag could limit its appeal to only the most dedicated Apple enthusiasts.
