Pokémon Legends: Z-A is shaping up to be the definitive return of Mega Evolutions, and The Pokémon Company has already pulled back the curtain on several new designs.
While the game won’t introduce brand-new species, its Kalos setting – the birthplace of Mega Evolution – makes it the perfect backdrop for reimagining old favorites.
The headline reveal was Mega Dragonite, the first new Mega Pokémon in over a decade. The design leans into Dragonite’s Dragonair roots, giving it jeweled accents and dramatic head-wings. According to its official lore, Mega Dragonite fights with a kind smile and will even pause mid-battle to help those in danger. Not everyone’s convinced by its look, but its lore reinforces Dragonite’s reputation as a gentle powerhouse.
Next came Mega Victreebel, reimagined as an overstuffed acid trap. Its swollen body and bulging mouth make it more menacing than ever, though some fans see the design as a little grotesque. In battle, it bounces around, flapping its oversized leaves before launching Sludge Bombs. The acid runs so strong that it must bind its own throat with vines to stop itself from leaking.
Rounding out the trio so far is Mega Hawlucha. Already a fan-favorite lucha-libre bird, its Mega Evolution enhances its wrestler persona: bulked muscles, defensive resilience, and a showy fighting style that keeps its flair intact. Its Flying Press move becomes the centerpiece of its performance, as it taunts and dazzles while dealing punishing blows.
Older Megas such as Mega Kangaskhan, Absol, and Charizard X are confirmed to return, while the story introduces dangerous “Rogue Mega Pokémon” roaming wild. Players will battle these threats alongside their own Megas and with the help of Team MZ allies. How this ties into Zygarde’s role remains under wraps, but Mega Evolutions are clearly the heart of the game’s narrative.
Adding fuel to the hype, a major leak suggests 27 Pokémon across regions will receive Mega forms in Legends: Z-A. While leaks always come with asterisks, the direction so far suggests both nostalgic returns and bold reinterpretations. For some, Mega Dragonite is a dream come true. For others, designs like Mega Victreebel push the limits of what they wanted to see. Either way, Legends: Z-A is ensuring Mega Evolutions feel unpredictable again.
