Apple May Use LG’s Tandem OLED Displays in Future iPhones

LG Display is making a strong push to get Apple to adopt its Tandem OLED technology in future iPhones. This display innovation, already featured in the latest iPad Pro models, layers two OLED sheets on top of one another to boost brightness, extend panel longevity, and improve power efficiency.

According to recent reports, Apple is exploring the possibility of using Tandem OLED in its 2028 iPhone lineup – potentially the iPhone 20 or whatever naming convention Apple chooses by then.

However, no final decision has been made. If Apple commits, LG could secure a significant advantage over Samsung Display, its primary competitor, as it already holds 348 U.S. patents related to Tandem OLED.

Interestingly, Apple’s approach may not be identical to the iPad Pro implementation. Instead of stacking all subpixels, Apple is reportedly considering a ‘simplified tandem’ structure – doubling only the blue subpixels while leaving red and green on a single layer. This would cut costs while addressing the faster degradation of blue subpixels, striking a balance between performance and efficiency.

For LG, winning Apple’s business in iPhones would be a major milestone, potentially reshaping the display supply chain and putting Tandem OLED firmly in the mainstream smartphone market.
