One of the biggest frustrations with AI image generators has been character inconsistency – ask the system to keep the same face across different scenarios and you often end up with a completely new person. Google is now tackling that head-on with a major update to its Gemini app, introducing a new DeepMind-built editing model nicknamed nano banana.
The core breakthrough is likeness preservation.
Whether you’re uploading a photo of yourself, a friend, or even your pet, Gemini can apply dramatic edits without losing the subject’s recognizable features. Think retro hairstyles, fantasy costumes, or playful tweaks like dressing your dog in a ballerina outfit – all while ensuring the face and identity stay intact.
Beyond simple fun, Gemini’s new tools open the door to more advanced workflows. The app supports multi-step editing where each instruction builds on the last: repaint walls, add furniture, change lighting, all in sequence. It also enables creative blending – like merging portraits with backgrounds or borrowing patterns from one object to redesign another. Suddenly, putting yourself next to your pet on a basketball court doesn’t feel like a clumsy collage but a seamless composition.
Crucially, every generated image will carry an AI watermark, making it clear when technology has lent a hand. For creators, the update transforms Gemini from a novelty into a reliable tool for projects that need both creativity and consistency. If the model delivers as promised, Google could pull ahead of rivals by offering the first mainstream AI photo editor that actually makes people look like themselves.
The rollout begins today inside the Gemini app. Users worldwide will gradually gain access to this new editing engine, potentially reshaping how AI-generated visuals are used in personal and professional contexts.
Coming soon: Google also teased an upcoming release, Iconic Phones: Revolution at Your Fingertips, a glossy coffee table book celebrating the greatest mobile devices of the 21st century. Launching this fall, it aims to be a nostalgia-packed showcase for tech enthusiasts.
