Nintendo fans may want to circle mid-September 2025 on their calendars. Reliable leaker SwitchForce hinted that the next Nintendo Direct could land on September 12, a date that conveniently sits just one day before the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. Industry outlet VGC later backed the claim, noting that September has historically been the month for major Nintendo Directs, with last year being the rare exception.
What remains unclear is the format of the event.
Nintendo Directs vary widely, from general showcases featuring first- and third-party games to smaller Partner Showcases, Indie World presentations, or single-game deep dives. This year alone, fans have already seen highly focused Directs spotlighting Kirby Air Riders, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Mario Kart World, while April brought the reveal of the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 in a full general Direct.
Given that pattern, expectations are building for a larger showcase this time around. Fans are hoping for updates on Nintendo’s biggest projects, with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond leading the speculation. The game, teased for a late 2025 release and already playable in demos at Gamescom and Fan Expo, seems like a strong candidate for a spotlight.
With Sony also rumored to be preparing its own State of Play in September, the gaming industry could be heading toward another face-off between the two giants. If Nintendo does go big, this Direct might not only celebrate Mario’s 40 years but also set the stage for what’s next on Switch 2.
