ASRock has stepped into the heated debate around melting GPU power connectors with the launch of its new 12V-2×6 L-Type cable. For years now, high-end GPUs – especially RTX 50 series cards – have been plagued by reports of scorched or melted 16-pin connectors, often leaving owners with expensive, warranty-voided hardware.
While the 12V-2×6 standard has eased the issue slightly, it hasn’t solved the underlying flaw: too much current drawn through a single fragile connection.
The new ASRock cable introduces something different – a built-in NTC sensor designed to monitor resistance changes and trigger Over-Temperature Protection (OTP). In theory, this should prevent connectors from overheating before damage occurs. On top of that, the L-shaped design reduces cable bending stress near the plug, one of the main causes of failures.
There are, however, some caveats. The cable is only compatible with ASRock’s Taichi and Phantom Gaming series PSUs, meaning you’ll need to upgrade your power supply if you want the full protection package. At around $40, it’s not cheap, but many gamers may see it as a worthwhile investment compared to losing a $1,000+ graphics card.
ASRock has also included a dual-color indicator system to confirm proper insertion, echoing MSI’s earlier attempt at a visual plug-in confirmation. While this doesn’t eliminate all risk, it does make user error less likely. The company further advises users to avoid bending the cable near the connector and to ensure the plug is properly seated and click-locked.
With a two-year warranty and safety-focused features, ASRock’s 12V-2×6 L-Type cable is currently the most advanced attempt to tame this troublesome standard. It won’t magically erase the industry’s flawed connector design, but for RTX 50-series owners worried about their investment, it may be the most practical fix available right now.
