Elon Musk has officially taken his long-standing complaints about Apple and OpenAI into the courtroom.

His AI company, xAI, has filed a lawsuit in a Texas federal court, accusing the two tech giants of colluding to shut out competition – specifically Musk’s own Grok app.

The lawsuit argues that Apple gives OpenAI’s ChatGPT preferential treatment in the App Store, locking up the market and making it nearly impossible for other AI platforms to climb the rankings. Musk’s team claims this arrangement amounts to an illegal monopoly and is demanding billions of dollars in damages.

This clash didn’t come out of nowhere. Musk has previously criticized Apple’s cozy relationship with OpenAI, warning he would take legal action if the bias continued. Now, with ChatGPT dominating the top charts on iOS, Musk is following through.

OpenAI was quick to fire back, dismissing the lawsuit as yet another chapter in what they describe as Musk’s “pattern of harassment.” CEO Sam Altman also pointed out Musk’s own double standards, saying that X (formerly Twitter) is structured to benefit Musk’s personal and financial interests. Apple, meanwhile, has not yet commented on the case but is already fighting similar accusations of anti-competitive behavior, most notably in its years-long battle with Epic Games over App Store rules and payment policies.

Whether Musk’s lawsuit reshapes the AI market or just becomes another headline in his ongoing feud with Big Tech remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Grok’s fight to be noticed has now escalated into a billion-dollar courtroom war.
