Google is quietly turning Drive into more than just a file locker.

After adding automatic captions, instant playback, and thumbnail previews for uploaded videos, the company is now introducing Google Vids integration directly into Drive.

Soon, users on supported Workspace domains will notice a purple Google Vids button when opening a video file in Drive. With one click, that video can be loaded into Google Vids, where it can be trimmed, annotated with text, and enhanced with music or other simple effects – all within the cloud. Once finished, edits are saved as a new Vids file rather than altering the original.

The feature comes with a few restrictions: it supports MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM formats under 35 minutes in length and below 4GB in size. It’s also not coming to free Drive accounts, but rather to Workspace customers across tiers like Business Starter, Enterprise, Essentials, Nonprofits, Gemini Education, Google AI Pro/Ultra, and others. Rollout will begin over the next 15 days.

While Drive’s video editing tools remain fairly basic, they eliminate the need for external software and make quick changes easy from anywhere. Desktop remains the best experience, though even mobile browsers should be capable of handling edits with some patience.
