Samsung is quietly preparing the next big step in its software journey: One UI 8, built on Android 16. Recent findings suggest the company is testing the new update not just on its latest flagships, but also across a wide range of older Galaxy phones and tablets.
Leaks from the CheckFirm app reveal internal and beta builds appearing for numerous models, including the Galaxy S23 and S22 series, the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, as well as popular mid-rangers like the Galaxy A54 and A73.
Interestingly, even some devices that won’t officially join the beta program have been spotted with test builds. This has sparked curiosity – and a bit of concern. History shows Samsung isn’t afraid to cut off older models. The Galaxy S20, for instance, missed out on One UI 7, and now the Galaxy S21 might suffer the same fate with One UI 8. That aligns with Samsung’s four-year major update promise for those devices, while newer flagships like the Galaxy S24 boast an extended seven-year support plan.
The first phones to ship with One UI 8 pre-installed are the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, while the Galaxy S25 has been testing the update since May. Over the summer, Samsung also rolled out beta versions for the Galaxy S24, Z Fold 6, and Z Flip 6. More models, including the Galaxy S23 line, are set to receive the beta soon.
One UI 8 is more than a version bump. The update refines Samsung’s design language with polished icons, smoother animations, and consistent menus. It also integrates deeper AI features and system-wide performance boosts. With competitors like Apple pushing iOS 26 and its Liquid Glass redesign on schedule, Samsung is under pressure to deliver a smoother rollout than the rocky One UI 7 cycle.
For Galaxy fans, the stakes are high. While some devices may miss out, the update promises a slicker, faster, and more intelligent experience for those who get it. Until Samsung makes things official, the only certainty is that the One UI 8 rollout will once again divide owners into the lucky and the left behind.
