During Google’s big hardware showcase, the spotlight was on the Pixel 10 series, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Buds 2a – but a quiet surprise stole attention: an unreleased smart home speaker powered by Gemini. A fresh leak now sheds light on what’s coming.
The speaker, which is currently in development, will be available in several bold finishes – bright red, light green (likely called Jade), classic Obsidian black, and Google’s trademark Porcelain white.
Unlike previous Google speakers, this one has a glowing light ring at its base that activates when interacting with Gemini, adding a futuristic touch to the living room.
Gemini Live will be at the core of the experience, though limited to voice interactions. While on smartphones Gemini can also process visuals via the camera, here the focus is entirely on natural conversation. To make this more engaging, Google is preparing new, human-like AI voices. The speaker will also handle media playback, music searches, and household automations.
One standout feature is smart sound detection. The device can recognize critical noises – like breaking glass or smoke alarms – and immediately push alerts to your phone. In addition, the speaker can pair with Google TV Streamers, effectively spreading TV audio across multiple rooms, a feature that pushes it closer to a home theater system. Compatibility with the Matter standard ensures it won’t be locked into a closed ecosystem.
While the launch window remains a mystery, the smart home race is clearly heating up. The question is whether Google’s latest attempt will win long-term user trust after its track record of retiring earlier smart speakers unexpectedly.
