WhatsApp is quietly testing a feature that feels like a modern twist on voicemail.
WhatsApp Is Testing a Voicemail-Style Feature for Missed Calls
After experimenting last month with call reminders, the Meta-owned platform is now working on a tool that lets users leave a quick voice message when their calls go unanswered.

Spotted in beta version 2.25.23.21 for Android, the feature adds a new shortcut. If your call isn’t picked up, WhatsApp will show options like “Call again,” “Cancel,” and a new “Record voice message” button. The same option also appears directly in the chat window, letting you instantly leave a note instead of fumbling with attachments.

Sure, you can already send a regular voice note through the paperclip menu, but this integration makes the process frictionless. Think of it as voicemail without the clunky dialing and inbox checking, wrapped into the app’s usual flow.

For now, only a handful of beta testers have access, and WhatsApp hasn’t revealed when – or if – it will roll out more widely. Some see it as another small step in making WhatsApp more usable, while others argue the company is still playing catch-up to rivals like Telegram, which are faster at delivering innovative features.

Security concerns also continue to hang over WhatsApp. Researchers and security experts have long highlighted unpatched vulnerabilities and risks tied to the app’s design, reminding users that convenience and massive adoption don’t always equal safety.
