At gamescom 2025, IllFonic revealed their highly anticipated Halloween game, based on the iconic 1978 film. This marks a new direction for the developer, known for its multiplayer-focused horror games like Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator Hunting Grounds. For the first time, Halloween will feature a single-player mode, catering to fans who prefer a more solo experience.

Set to release in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, this game promises a thrilling dive into the world of Michael Myers.

IllFonic has always been a pioneer in asymmetrical multiplayer horror, but for Halloween, they wanted to ensure that fans who don’t typically engage with multiplayer games wouldn’t be left out. Chief Creative Officer Jared Gerritzen explained, “In the past, we’ve seen that some people just don’t play multiplayer games, and we’ve learned that the hard way. So, with Halloween, we wanted to bring in a solo experience that would resonate with a broader audience.” This decision came from their own experiences working on Ghostbusters, where they introduced a solo mode, which ultimately helped players transition to the multiplayer aspect.

The Halloween game will delve deep into the original film’s universe, with heavy involvement from legendary director John Carpenter and Compass International Pictures. The story will weave through the events of the 1978 movie, offering a unique experience for both longtime fans and newcomers. “We want players to experience the horror of Michael Myers in a way they haven’t before,” Gerritzen said, hinting that the game will explore more than just the iconic kills.

One of the most exciting aspects of the game is the collaboration with Carpenter. The team worked closely with him to ensure the game stays true to the essence of the original film. “It’s been incredible working with John,” said Gerritzen. “We know this franchise like the back of our hands, and we’re making sure everything fits perfectly within the world he created.” Carpenter’s influence is particularly felt in the game’s atmosphere, with IllFonic striving to capture the eeriness and tension that defined the 1978 classic.

Design Director Jordan Mathewson elaborated on the game’s setting, describing how the team is recreating the small, quiet town of Haddonfield. The game’s 1970s period setting plays a significant role, as technology from that time – like rotary phones and landlines – will impact gameplay. Mathewson explained, “It’s all about creating that sense of realism. We want players to experience the time period, and that means understanding how technology worked back then. It’s a fun challenge, especially for younger staff who didn’t grow up with it!”

Fans can expect a grounded experience that stays true to the roots of Halloween. The single-player campaign will offer a mix of exploration, tension-filled moments, and, of course, the terrifying presence of Michael Myers. However, the game will also introduce some gameplay systems that help flesh out the story and its characters. Gerritzen teased, “Some of the systems we’ve developed are going to make fans see Michael Myers in a whole new way. It’s been a lot of fun pushing the boundaries while still respecting the canon of the film.”

As for the look of Michael Myers, the team paid extra attention to the details. The mask, a key symbol of the franchise, was recreated with the highest fidelity. Gerritzen revealed, “We put a laser beam on that mask and examined every wrinkle, every crack. We wanted to capture its true essence, and I think we’ve nailed it.” The authenticity of the mask has been a key focus for the team, ensuring that every detail matches the original as closely as possible.

Overall, the Halloween game promises to be a fresh take on the slasher genre, offering both single-player and multiplayer experiences. With the involvement of John Carpenter and the dedication to authenticity, it’s shaping up to be a must-play for horror fans and gamers alike.

Sounds interesting. Mikey is my favorite character to play in that dead by daylight game. I like that it’s set during the original movie too
