The Rogue Prince of Persia has made a dramatic entrance on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, dropping without prior warning during Xbox’s Gamescom 2025 showcase. The stylish roguelite, developed by Evil Empire – the same studio behind the acclaimed Dead Cells – and published by Ubisoft, is also instantly available through Xbox Game Pass, giving subscribers the chance to dive straight into its brutal platforming combat.

While this launch was technically framed as a shadow-drop, many fans already suspected the timing.

Ubisoft had hinted back in June that the full 1.0 release would land sometime in August 2025. Still, the confirmation during Gamescom caught plenty off guard, turning the game’s arrival into one of the event’s biggest surprises.

The Rogue Prince of Persia has had a long journey since its Early Access debut in May 2024. Even in its unfinished state, critics praised it as a masterful fusion of fast-paced platforming and roguelite depth. Reviewers highlighted its blend of Prince of Persia’s trademark wall-running and environmental puzzles with Dead Cells-style procedural progression, relentless combat, and punishing death loops.

Francesco De Meo of Wccftech, reviewing the Early Access version, summed it up best: the game already offered “a more involved narrative, excellent platforming, dynamic combat and a lot of death” – all the hallmarks of a genre standout. With a year of refinement, players can now experience the polished vision in its entirety. Nintendo Switch and the newly announced Switch 2 versions are slated to follow later this year.
