Treyarch has revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has been in development alongside last year’s Black Ops 6, offering fans reassurance that this year’s entry wasn’t rushed. According to associate creative director Miles Leslie, both titles were greenlit at the same time, with production beginning in parallel. While Black Ops 6 transported players to the chaos of 1991, its follow-up jumps forward to 2035, delivering a sharp contrast in tone and technology.
Leslie explained that although the two projects ramped up at different paces, the team knew from the beginning they’d be tackling a back-to-back challenge.
For Treyarch and Raven Software, that meant building a long-term narrative roadmap rather than scrambling for quick turnarounds.
Narrative producer Natalie Pohorski added that the payoff for players will be noticeable: many of the innovations pioneered in Black Ops 6 will carry forward into Black Ops 7, creating a smoother sense of continuity between campaigns. That should be a welcome relief for Call of Duty fans still stung by the rushed Modern Warfare 3 campaign, which suffered from its DLC-turned-full-game origins.
With years of work already invested, Black Ops 7 is shaping up to be more than just another annual release. Instead, it promises to deepen the series’ single-player storytelling while refining the gameplay foundation set last year. Fans will have to wait until launch to see how far that 2035 vision goes, but the signs point to a carefully prepared follow-up rather than another sprint to the finish line.
