Apple may be preparing a new twist for its accessory lineup with the upcoming iPhone 17.

Fresh leaks suggest the company is developing a line of so-called “Liquid Silicone” cases, which could mark a shift toward more practical and user-friendly designs. The cases are rumored to feature smooth finishes, a subtle shimmer described as a “Liquid Glass effect,” and – most intriguingly – built-in lanyard support.

According to leaker Majin Bu, who has a track record of accurate Apple scoops, the leaked cases appear to be genuine samples. Unlike Apple’s typical sleek but minimalist covers, these designs incorporate multiple cutouts at the bottom that can be used to attach a lanyard or wrist strap. This would be the first time Apple officially offers lanyard support on its iPhone cases, though the company has dabbled in similar ideas before with the AirPods Pro 2 charging case and the old iPod touch loop system.

The resemblance to third-party designs hasn’t gone unnoticed. Many pointed out how the cases echo Casetify’s Ripple cases or rival offerings from Peak Design, which built a reputation around strong anchor link systems for straps and tethers. By moving in this direction, Apple seems ready to compete directly with accessory brands that long filled this gap for iPhone users.

For people who frequently shoot photos on the go, attend crowded events, or simply want peace of mind when holding a $1,000 smartphone, a lanyard-ready case feels like an overdue but welcome option. If the leak proves correct, Apple could finally be embracing utility alongside style, offering a case that combines durability, premium finish, and practical functionality in one package.
