History was made at the 2025 Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, where 12-year-old Kevin Han from Pennsylvania became the first player ever to capture both the Junior and Senior division titles in the Video Game Championships – and he did it in consecutive years.
Han, who swept this year’s tournament without losing a single match, capped off his undefeated run with a decisive 2-0 victory in the finals over South Korea’s Sian Lee.
The achievement carried extra drama, as Lee had handed Han one of his rare defeats in the previous year’s Junior division campaign. This time, Han left no room for doubt, closing out the final match with a devastating Double K.O. from his Ice Rider Calyrex’s Glacial Lance, toppling Lee’s Rillaboom and finishing off Zamazenta.
Han admitted to battling nerves before the finals, but his older brother Chris reassured him to trust his instincts. That advice proved prophetic: “After the first turn of each game I felt a lot better. A little nervous energy can actually help you,” Kevin reflected after his historic win.
His back-to-back titles position him uniquely for the future. Ray Rizzo remains the only other competitor to win world championships in multiple divisions – Seniors in 2010 and Masters in 2011 – but Han now stands alone as the only player with both Junior and Senior crowns. When he eventually ages into the Masters division, he could become the first to complete the full trifecta.
This year’s event also broke new ground for the tournament itself: for the first time, Championship Sunday was staged in a dedicated arena rather than on a convention hall floor, underscoring just how much the Pokémon competitive scene has grown.
