Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has officially filed a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation, accusing the massively popular online platform of failing to protect children from predators.
In her statement, Murrill described Roblox as a place where sex predators thrive due to weak safety measures, despite the fact that its player base is largely children.
The lawsuit paints a grim picture, alleging that Roblox has for years ignored warnings and allowed an environment where exploitation of minors could flourish. It further claims the company deceived parents and deliberately failed to warn families about dangers well-documented on the platform. The filing emphasizes that this negligence has directly harmed children in Louisiana.
While this lawsuit is specific to Louisiana, the concerns echo worldwide. Roblox, launched in 2006, has exploded in popularity and now boasts over 85 million daily active users. The company even admits that half of American children under 16 log in at least once a month. Yet, the same global reach has led to bans in countries like China, Turkey, Oman, and Qatar, where governments pointed to risks of child exploitation.
In response to mounting criticism, Roblox recently added new parental controls: players under 13 require parental approval for certain chat functions, and those under 9 cannot enter experiences rated “Moderate” without consent. But Louisiana’s Attorney General argues these steps are far too late and far too weak, especially as the platform just removed community ‘vigilantes’ who tried to self-police harmful behavior.
The case highlights an ongoing debate: can Roblox be both a creative hub for young players and a safe place for children? For now, the courtroom battle could redefine the company’s responsibilities-and its reputation.
