Mafia: The Old Country has hit the ground running, selling over 800,000 copies across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in its first week, according to Sensor Tower.
Nearly half of these sales-48%-came from PlayStation, reinforcing the platform’s strong pull for story-focused single-player titles.
Sensor Tower noted that the game’s success proves the Mafia series still resonates, and that Hangar 13’s choice to stick with a linear, cinematic narrative was the right call. Early player activity numbers are staggering too-over 185 million enemies taken down and more than 600 million shots fired in just seven days.
While the numbers impress, not everyone is fully on board. Some players argue the experience feels more like an interactive movie, with lengthy tutorials, repeated combat encounters, and little replay variety. Others point out the absence of deeper exploration of the Sicilian countryside, a missed opportunity for immersion.
Hangar 13 isn’t slowing down, though. The studio confirmed a free ‘Free Ride’ mode is on the way, alongside new activities and gameplay updates. Critics like Wccftech’s Alessio Palumbo praised its gripping story and solid gameplay foundation, calling it one of the best Mafia narratives in gaming-though still wishing for more freedom to roam.
It’s clear that Mafia: The Old Country has sparked both excitement and debate. Whether it’s a must-play classic or a watch-on-YouTube experience depends entirely on what you value in a game: cinematic storytelling or deep, interactive freedom.
