The long-awaited unrated cut of The Toxic Avenger is finally hitting theaters this month, and let’s just say it lives up to the wild reputation fans have been whispering about for years.
Directed by Macon Blair and starring Peter Dinklage as the infamous Toxie, this reboot of the 1984 cult classic doesn’t hold back on the grotesque, bizarre, and yes-downright absurd.
The buzz really took off when a leaked image began circulating online, showing Toxie in one of the film’s most outrageous moments: escaping danger by unleashing radioactive urine, complete with a full reveal of his so-called ‘Monster Dong.’ Horror outlet Bloody Disgusting, which confirmed the leak, explained that this scene is exclusive to the unrated cut hitting cinemas. For longtime fans, it’s the kind of boundary-pushing nonsense that makes this franchise special.
Cineverse, which owns Bloody Disgusting and is distributing the film, doubled down on giving Blair complete creative freedom. Tom Owens, VP at Cineverse and co-founder of Bloody Disgusting, compared the situation to Damien Leone’s Terrifier films, which also rattled theaters before becoming indie horror hits. Owens said, “If we weren’t going to release the full Unrated cut, then it didn’t make sense to release the movie at all.”
The studio even teased fans months ago with an image of Elijah Wood’s grotesque villain, Fritz Harbinger, stamped with an ‘unrated’ tag promising ‘ultra violent/toxic content, piss play, mutant nudity, and gnarly theater fun.’ Now audiences know exactly what that means.
The Toxic Avenger first premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2023, where it earned a raucous reception but languished without release due to its unapologetically over-the-top content. Two years later, the film is finally clawing its way into theaters nationwide on August 29, 2025. The unrated cut promises to be as disgusting, funny, and chaotic as the original spirit of Troma intended-just with even more radioactive body fluids.
