Warner Bros. is reportedly eyeing a prequel film for one of the standout characters in Zach Cregger’s latest horror hit, Weapons. If you’ve seen the movie, you’re probably familiar with Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan – a character that, despite not getting her own backstory in the film, has sparked so much intrigue that a prequel might be in the works.

and New Line Cinema have started discussions with Cregger about diving deeper into Gladys’ origins. The character was originally set to have a larger role in the film, with Cregger even writing a full chapter that explored her backstory. However, as the film’s script grew too long, that chapter ended up being cut, leaving Gladys’ past a mystery.
While this omission may seem like a missed opportunity, it seems to be working in the film’s favor. Weapons has been a major hit at the box office and is generating significant buzz, with audiences praising the film’s dark humor and intense atmosphere. As for the prequel, no deal has been officially struck, especially since Cregger is currently focused on his third feature film – a Resident Evil reboot starring Austin Abrams. But with Cregger’s next project slated for a 2026 release, it’s possible that a Gladys-focused prequel could become a reality.
Despite the growing interest in exploring more of Gladys’ story, not everyone is thrilled about the idea. Many fans feel that the prequel obsession is overdone in Hollywood, and some argue that explaining a character’s evil background, as seen with Rob Zombie’s Halloween, only diminishes their scariness.
