Google is rolling out new features for the Gemini app, making it more personal and customizable, all while offering users better control over their privacy.
Gemini App Update Adds Personalized Chats and Temporary Conversations for Better Privacy
The update introduces a Personal Context setting, a Temporary Chat feature, and enhancements to privacy management.

Personalized Responses Based on Past Chats

The new Personal Context feature allows Gemini to remember details from previous conversations, using this information to provide more relevant suggestions in future chats. Over time, this will make interactions feel more organic and catered to individual preferences.

For instance, if you’ve previously discussed your love for a particular comic book character, Gemini might suggest birthday party ideas tied to that character. Or if you’ve requested book recommendations, it might point you to similar titles. If you’ve talked about creating content related to Japanese culture, you may receive suggestions along those lines in future chats.

This feature is automatically enabled for Gemini 2.5 Pro users in select regions, with plans to extend availability to more models and countries. Users can opt out at any time in the app’s settings under “Personal Context.”

Temporary Chat for Privacy

The update also brings the Temporary Chat option, allowing users to engage in one-time conversations that won’t affect future chats or be saved in the app’s activity log. These chats will be preserved for 72 hours, giving Gemini enough time to process and respond to feedback. However, they won’t be used for training AI models or stored in the app’s history.

This is ideal for sensitive topics or brainstorming sessions that you don’t want to be tracked or remembered.

New Ways to Manage Your Data

Along with these features, Google is renaming the “Gemini Apps Activity” setting to “Keep Activity,” which can now be toggled on or off. When enabled, a sample of future uploads, such as files and photos, might be used to improve Google services. If you’d rather not share this data, you can turn it off or use the Temporary Chat option instead.

Another recent update allows users to decide if audio, video, and screen-sharing content with Gemini will be used to enhance Google’s services. This feature is off by default but can be switched on at any time.

These improvements bring Gemini in line with other AI assistants, like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, which offer both personalized and history-free chat modes. Gemini stands out by making it simple to toggle these settings on and off, offering a level of control that could appeal to mobile users who want flexibility.

While these updates help make Gemini feel more like a personalized assistant, the question remains: will users be comfortable with personalization, or will they prefer keeping conversations private with the one-off Temporary Chat option?

Don’t trust these apps with anything personal. Glad I can turn it off!
