Unveiled at SIGGRAPH 2025, NSS promises sharper visuals, higher frame rates, and better battery life for Android flagships and gaming phones.

The system works much like NVIDIA’s DLSS – rendering at a lower resolution, then using a trained neural network to upscale the image in real time. In Arm’s demo, 540p frames were reconstructed to look near-native 1080p, processed on dedicated on-chip neural accelerators in just 4ms per frame. The result? High-quality visuals with less GPU strain, keeping frame rates smooth and energy usage low.

Unlike older upscaling methods that suffer from smearing or ghosting, NSS leverages AI detail reconstruction for cleaner, more immersive gameplay. And it’s not just for gaming – the same neural accelerators can power ray tracing denoising and AI-enhanced camera features, bringing visual improvements across mobile experiences.

While DLSS runs on NVIDIA Tensor Cores in desktop GPUs, NSS is purpose-built for mobile via Mali’s neural hardware. This means DLSS-like benefits on the go, without the desktop power drain. Developers will also get early access to Arm’s Neural Graphics Development Kit, complete with an Unreal Engine plugin, Vulkan-based PC emulation, updated profiling tools, and Hugging Face integration – giving them a head start to optimize games and apps for the tech before it hits devices.

Looking ahead, Arm plans to add Neural Frame Rate Upscaling and Neural Super Sampling Denoising in 2026, aiming to push mobile graphics even closer to console-quality performance. If successful, NSS could mark a major shift in how mobile GPUs deliver both beauty and speed, all while sipping less power.
