Sony is taking strategic steps to keep the PlayStation 5 price steady in the United States, even amid ongoing global economic uncertainty and tariff concerns.

During its Q1 2026 earnings call, CFO Lin Tao confirmed that production of PS5 units destined for the US market has already shifted outside of China to minimize the impact of tariffs. This diversification move is aimed at maintaining price stability and ensuring a smoother supply chain.

Peripheral production is also being relocated, with the transition expected to finish by the end of the first half of the fiscal year. However, Sony’s pricing strategy for consoles remains fluid. Factors like profitability, lifetime value, sales volume, expected content revenue, and consumer response to pricing will all influence future decisions.

While Sony has managed to keep US prices unchanged so far, other regions haven’t been as fortunate. In April, the PS5 saw price hikes in Europe, the UK, and Australia. In contrast, Nintendo recently raised the price of its original Switch models in the US by $30 to $50, unable to shield customers from market pressures.

Looking ahead, leaks suggest Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 6 aims to deliver native 4K gaming at 120 FPS while keeping the cost under $900. If achieved, it could be a strong value proposition in the next console war, especially if economic turbulence continues to affect pricing across the industry.
