Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its most affordable MacBook yet, with a starting price of just $599. 
According to a DigiTimes report spotted by @Jukanlosreve, the new laptop will feature a 12.9-inch display – slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch MacBook Air – and could enter mass production for certain components as early as Q3 2025.
While Apple has not confirmed the hardware specifications, the low-cost MacBook is expected to be powered by the A18 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Final assembly will likely take place at Quanta’s facilities in Q4 2025, setting the stage for a late 2025 or early 2026 release.
The pricing represents a major shift from Apple’s traditional Mac strategy. The MacBook Air’s base model debuted at $999 but often dropped to $799, making it one of Apple’s most popular laptops. A $599 entry point could be a game-changer, especially for students and budget-conscious buyers seeking portability without sacrificing performance.
Industry analysts believe this move could pressure competitors to offer better hardware at similar price points, much like the way Apple’s iPad strategy reshaped the tablet market. In this price bracket, the only notable Apple alternative is the M4 Mac mini, but it lacks a display and portability – two key factors for mobile users.
If Apple delivers on this rumored price and performance, the upcoming MacBook could not only dominate the entry-level laptop segment but also boost Mac shipments significantly. It might even serve as the long-awaited nudge for the industry to make quality computing more accessible.
